Monday, the 3rd of September 1984, was an important day for many of us who grew up under apartheid, especially for those of us from townships of the Vaal region. It was the day on which thousands of Black South Africans stood up collectively in the launch of a campaign that marked the beginning of national boycotts of payments for rates and services (the rent boycotts).
